CIRCUS TALKS & THOUGHTS

Each evening of National Training week industry talks will be facilitated around topics suggested by the community. A space to reflect on our past, think bigger picture, discuss circus matters, advocacy and what is needed to help us grow and heal. Over the festival 3 days we have works which will provoke thoughts, push boundaries and some offer discussion or reflection post performance.

Jake Silvestro

December

A captivating solo physical theatre performance created by Australian multidisciplinary artist. December marks our history and honours those affected by 2020’s Black Summer. Combining visual art and circus on a powerful scale, December presents a fictional future that is fast becoming our realistic present. Exploring themes of loss and isolation, and the consequences of Australia’s bushfires, Silvestro creates hope amid a scene of ash and rubble. Speaking to the resilience of a country hit hard during the ongoing climate crisis, this enthralling new work prompts reflection on our actions to prevent our past from defining our future.

ACROBAT

WORLD REPAIR DISRUPTION INCOMING!

Acrobat diligently toured their avant-garde circus performances internationally for over 20 years. An uncompromising ethos and idiosyncratic aesthetic generated a cult following but failed to prompt the necessary insurgency needed to topple free market capitalism.

Now old and cantankerous, they have turned their backs on their physical discipline and are threatening to trigger a punk / clown / beekeeper uprising.

Superficially, it’s funny because they think they can make a difference, but substantially, it’s tragic because they think they can make a difference.

AXPHYXIA

INCLUSIVE PRACTICE. OUR ROLE IN LEADING THE WAY

Local award-winning artist Asphyxia, joins the Youth Circus Symposium to inspire us about herself and her journey. She will help us question and reflect on our organisations, and their accessibility and inclusiveness in programs, projects and staffing. Are we practicing what we hope to be? Is circus a place accessible to everyone?

The Birth Suite

Britt Portelli & Sarah Temporal

Two women met at the farmers market. While their children played on the grass they started chatting, and asked, "What did you do before becoming a Mum?" The question sparked a new collaboration between former touring acrobat Britt Portelli and prize-winning performance poet Sarah Temporal. Bringing together words and movement, they explore stories of birth, transition, and creative lives now shaped by motherhood. The intersection of poetry and circus has proved fertile ground for these two artists, as they create innovative performance work praised for its intimacy, hilarity, and heart.

COLLECTIVE CIRCUS

WAITLISTED

An innovative and inspiring show that combines mesmerising visuals and thought-provoking circus. Created by a group of young performers eager to make their debut and leave their mark on the circus world. Collective Circus will provoke audiences' minds by shedding light on the often ignored and overlooked aspects that come with being young. This show received support from Flying Fruit Fly Circus through Under Construction. Waitlisted delves into mental health issues, we recognise that this topic may be confronting for some. We encourage viewers to take care of their own safety and well-being.

Anatomy for Circus Bodies

Tahmour will introduce the myofascial (myo - muscular, fascial - fascial) lines in the body & how they apply to your circus art. If you’ve wondered why it feels so good to stretch a certain way, or why your hand tension is so integral to balancing on a rola bola you’ve taken the first important dive into this wonderful world. Curiosity is all that is required for this discussion. Traditional anatomy breaks the body into 600 odd muscles, but anatomists are now starting to see the body in the way dancers and acrobats have felt it for centuries. Not as one individual muscle, but as a line of them - from head to toe, finger to spine. When they work in synergy we are able to execute well timed, graceful & powerful moves - pain free. This knowledge is to help you foster longevity in your training.

STATERA CIRCUS

This daring and hilarious work, featuring acrobatic employees, burgers, and our unique prop Perspex, is not one you’re soon to forget! Statera, the debut show of Statera Circus, explores the monotony of the 9 - 5 through our comedic characters and their plight to get out of work.

Our strong narrative using styles from physical theatre and clown will have you laughing out loud. Come and immerse yourself in our world!

Statera are one of our Artist in residency companies – this work will be presented as a work in development as part of the training program.

WOW Women’s CIRCUS

The Silence We Carry and The Anger I Hold

Originally devised in 2018 in response to the ‘Me Too’ movement. The work explores the ways in which a diverse group of WOW women have struggled, adapted and thrived in a society in which sexual harassment and abuse are prevalent.

Trigger Warning: This performance explores the shroud of secrecy that surrounds sexual abuse and harassment. There are no enactments or descriptions of sexual violence, however the piece is performed to spoken word poetry, so the meaning of the act is not ambiguous.

International Fun with funambulism

Inspirations & learnings from 2 large scale community participatory tight wire projects in Galway & Reims & how this will contribute to SeedArts project ‘River Crossing/Wizards of the Wire’ in Lismore 2023 to celebrate Lismore as the birthplace of world famous ‘Wizard of the Wire’ Con Colleano. Can we build this across states?
